Beaches

The area is filled with gorgeous bodies of water and pristine beaches to lay out on. It also features lots of opportunities for fishing, swimming, kayaking, stand up paddle boarding and more!

On Lake Superior:

  • Black River Harbor Beach- Known for its spectacular waterfalls, idyllic beaches, scenic hiking trails and tranquil campground, the Black River Harbor Recreation Area is a popular destination throughout the year.
  • Little Girl’s Point County Park- Take a break and unplug on this simple, but well maintained County Park and Beach. Little Girls Point extends over a half mile along Lake Superior. The beach is a magnet for rock pickers and agate hunters with crystal clear water to swim, paddle and float the day away. If you look Northwest you can see the Apostle Islands and Northeast, the Porcupine Mountains. There is a picnic area with 2 pavilions, picnic tables, grills and stone buildings with restrooms.
  • Saxon Harbor- Another beach on Lake Superior located just across the Michigan/Wisconsin boarder 5 miles west of Little Girls Point. Saxon Harbor is home to its famous sand beach with a newly remodeled boat harbor.

Other Water Opportunities:

  • Sunday Lake- Beautiful Sunday Lake is situated in the center of the city of Wakefield and is home to Eddy Park. The park offers a comfortable sandy beach and swimming area, pavilions available or rent, a boat launch, and a large playground.
  • Lost Lake (Spirit Lake)- Located North of Ironwood, on your way to Little Girl’s Point, Lost Lake is a small inland lake with a large dock, beach area and a non-motorized boat launch. This area also offers restrooms and a large pavilion.
  • Gile Flowage- Located in Hurley, WI, the Gile Flowage offers multiple opportunities for water activities. Enjoy fishing for Musky, Panfish, Smallmouth Bass, Northern Pike and Walleye. This is also a great place to kayak, canoe or SUP with many islands to explore. There are many public boat landings surrounding the lake, the main one is located at the Gile Park and offers a small beach area, playground, pavilion, and restrooms.
  • Lake Gogebic- The largest inland lake in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, Lake Gogebic, is located in the million-acre Ottawa National Forest, just outside Marenisco, MI. Lake Gogebic offers great fishing of walleye, northern pike, smallmouth bass, yellow perch and whitefish, and is productive year round to boat and shore anglers in spring, summer and fall.This lake offers many areas to launch your boat or play in the water. The main launch site is at the Lake Gogebic State Park and offers a boat launch, picnic shelter, restrooms, a metal detecting area, playground equipment, and a swimming beach.

Waterfalls

The Western Upper Peninsula and Northeast Wisconsin area offers numerous opportunities to view stunning waterfalls, several of which are close to the Big Powderhorn Village.  Click here for all the waterfalls in the area and directions to them!

Fishing

The area is surrounded by some of the best fishing locations in the Midwest. Take a charter and fish the depths of Lake Superior. Bring your boat and fish Lake Gogebic, the largest inland lake in Michigan.  Take an adventure and fish the Sylvania Wilderness or the Porcupine Mountains.  Challenge yourself and fish the many rivers and streams that cut through ancient forests like the Black River or the Presque Isle River.  There is something for every fisherman.

Fishing Trips: Various charter fishing boats are available for full and half day trips on the Grand Lake Superior. Lake Trout, Coho Salmon, Steelhead, and Chinook Salmon are the primary sought after species. Sunset and custom cruises are also available. If you have not yet had this experience, you are not truly alive yet! Some local charters include; Glaicer Girl Charter Fishing, Tracy Lee Charters, Timbers Resort Guides. Also be sure to check out the Watersmeet Trout Hatchery where you can do some fun family fishing!

Kayaking

Big Powderhorn Lodging Association is located just a short drive from Lake Superior, the largest freshwater body in the world. The rugged, pristine shoreline varies from long sandy beaches to towering jagged cliffs lined with trees. Paddle up rivers to the base of beautiful waterfalls. The rushing water from the spring melt offers the kayaker a true whitewater experience.
